XTorrent

I’ve been playing with the public beta release of David Watanabe’s new application, XTorrent today and I have to say, I’m impressed. If you’re looking for a bittorrent application, I suggest you try it out. XTorrent lets you specify sites to search in an integrated web browser, and is smart enough to know when you’ve clicked on a torrent file, adding it to the downloads. Goodbye torrent files all over my desktop! I’ve had a few minor problems (downloads from the main search list not getting added to the download manager?), but that’s to be expected. For a public beta it seems very stable. From a development standpoint, it must have been nice to be able to take advantage of a lot of the UI code from Acquisition, another very well designed application.

Also, I think this application gets the award for the quickest adoption of new iTunes 7 interface elements!

It is a very nice app. However I don’t understand why he couldn’t find a way to integrate it into Acquisition.

Hows it going? Yeah I just noticed xtorrent the other day, I can’t wait to full test it out. BTW we featured OnTheJob over at MacNewsOnline.com the other day, and were subsquently featured on Digg.com, check it out.

Nick: I saw the posting, thanks for including On The Job - I definitely noticed a bump in our traffic. I’m sure you helped a bunch of people find useful apps they wouldn’t have otherwise!

I think this is a great app and has made using torrents much easier. I’m pleased it wasn’t integrated in to Aquisition, apart from the fact I could never spell it, it’s always felt a bit too much for my needs. Xtorrent is a nice simple tool that allows me to create a torrent workflow. The fact it auto grabs the torrent file and cleans up is evidence that David has really thought about this app.

Actually, Acquisition has torrent-support, it’s was just not particularly good. I’ve been waiting for David to tackle this one standalone and I’m happy to see the results. A few feature additions and we’ve got the dream app for torrents… Can’t wait to license it once it hits GM.
