On The Way

First an announcement: On The Job 3 will be released in January 2009.
This project has taken much longer to get out than anticipated, for a variety of reasons. It was certainly not intentional, and has been a learning experience for us as a young company.
On The Job 3 is what I spend every day working on. We want it out more than anybody. The continued success of our company depends on it.
We have understandably been getting a lot of questions from people anticipating the release. First and foremost, beyond a release date, the questions are regarding new features. While we’re not ready to spill all of the beans yet, here are some details.
- Invoices will be more flexible, in both layout & design options, as well as what items are visible on the invoice.
- There will be functionality for tracking payments on invoices.
- Items in a Job will be able to have their own custom hourly rates.
- New support for multiple currencies.
- Full undo support.
- Automatic invoice number generation will be possible.
- Billing in quantities, and billing for mileage will now be possible.
- Individual timing sessions, including start and end times will be viewable and editable.
- Much more that I can’t wait to talk about.
A lot of these are smaller changes, but ones that have been asked for a lot. The actual engineering effort going into version 3 is actually much larger. Internally, it is nearly a complete rewrite.
I want to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and patience. The supportive emails we have been getting are great.
One last note - we will be looking for a few additional beta testers in the coming weeks. If you are interested, please send an email to onthejob-beta@stuntsoftware.com.
Update: We have enough beta testers at the moment - thank you for all of the offers!

Thanks so much for the update, Dan. I can’t wait until you can talk about the rest… and more importantly I can’t wait to start using OTJ3 to track my time.
YAY!!!!!
I was just hunting around here yesterday looking to see if there was any news.
I’m glad there’s an end in sight now - I’ll look forward to the update!
Exciting news - as a long time v2 user I’m very much looking forward to this.
Good luck with it.
Thanks for the update Dan, glad to hear there’s a general timeframe we can look forward to. Looking forward to what’s in store.
I’m very happy to hear an actual timeframe and some features mentioned. The possibility of seeing individual timing sessions is great news. Will you be able to create reports from these timing sessions (hours worked during a week across all projects, hours/cost for one project over a month, etc?)
Very exciting to see a launch date. Don’t suppose the big secret is a syncable iPhone version? No pressure!
I wish to see the timer in the main menu - because I use the floating Dock… Is this possible in Version 3?
Regards - Matthias
I have just purchased On The Job - it is fantastic. I didn’t think I’d be using the invoice feature, but I already am, on day one. Some user-control over the layout of the invoice would be great - which you are doing, so look forward to that. Also, I keep having to input the client’s address each time - can it be assigned to a Job folder, so all jobs in that folder will have the same address (editable if one does need to go somewhere else)? Thank you for reading, and thanks for a terrific app
I wanted to say one other minor thing… as an illustrator, I use OTJ to time work that I’m not doing on the computer - at the drawing table. I can set the idle warning for a huge amount of minutes so it doesn’t keep asking if I want to subtract the “idle” time… but will it be possible to toggle that option on and off?
Great software. I hope the new version will include the option of select a date range to invoice for. Say you have a client and do multiple projects during a month and want to bill monthly on one invoice. Thank would be great!
Looking forward to the next edition.
I’ve downloeaded the trail. Seems good for my needs and I will purchase. Feature request for next version: I’d really like to be able to see the timekeeping log of a task.
Time gets added in to each task, which is fine, but on odd occasions, being able to drill down and see what makes up the task total would be useful.
Great news.
And when will Downsize be updated? How long has it been?
Sorry to go off-topic like this, but quality of Downsize’d images is really bad and I’m really not happy with having to use some freeware app, when I bought Downsize.

Excellent news! Thank you for the update. I agree with the feature which will allow invoicing on a date range. That way you don’t have to create a new Job each time after invoicing.
Are we still going to be seeing this release in January?
Hi! Are you still releasing this month? I’m looking forward to it. A
Okay, it’s January 17. I really really needed this update already. I like your product. The one feature I’ve needed forever is the ability to give different tasks different rates. I’m looking forward to the other features as well. When, oh when, will it be ready for me to update.
I think a lot of us might have expected the update to be ready for MacWorld, but Dan only committed to January. He still has some time left to go and seems to be on track to (finally) launch OTJ 3.
Hi!
Yes, we are still planning on releasing towards the end of the month - hold tight everybody, we’re almost there. Thanks for all of the enthusiasm!

Hi all,
I know a lot of people are waiting on the release of OTJ3 (including me). I have been selected to be a member of the betatesters and I would like to inform you on the user experience of OTJ3.
I find OTJ3 a great improvement. Lots of new features. But most important, an improved workflow of tracing jobs you perform for clients. Still the logical interface of OTJ2 but inproved on the management of jobs.
Furthermore I really love the invoice manager. This is, for me personally, a real useful feature. Previously I was forced to cut&paste the default invoice entries to my invoice format. Now it is possible to create your own templates and directly send your invoice to your customer.
On the whole I really like the new OTJ3. It is worth the waiting. Hang in there, I believe it will be released soon

Jelle
Hi. Looks great, but the Idle detect doesn’t work for me. It comes up, but doesn’t subtract time.
I’m on a PPC G5. (not Intel) Is that why? And, is there a workaround or fix?
