WWDC2007

WWDC Buttons

Well, I’m off to San Francisco for WWDC2007 tomorrow. I can’t believe a year has gone by since the last one, but I am really looking forward to it. As a developer, Leopard is bringing so much cool stuff, and I can’t wait to see what people are going to be doing with it. It’ll also be nice just too meet up with some cocoa friends - it can be a little isolating being an indy mac dev sometimes!

It looks like there will also be quite a few extra-curricular activities during this year’s Expo. I’ve never been to one of Buzz’s WWDC parties before, but I will try to check it out this year. There’s also the Delicious Generation party, and the sfMacIndie Soirée that I’m going to try to make it to, assuming my plane gets in on time. And then there’s the moving of the Apple Campus Bash into San Francisco. I always kind of liked getting to visit the Apple Campus, but there were downsides, like the long bus rides, and the even longer lines to get on the buses. I’m willing to give the new venue a chance.

But what about the keynote? I feel like there are actually less rumors this year than usual, so maybe some actual surprises are in store! Then again, maybe the focus will just be on refining things we already know something about. I tend to agree with Craig Hockenberry and John Gruber that resolution independence will be a big thing. I’m sure Steve will mention the iPhone, although I’d be surprised if an actual iPhone SDK is announced. Hopefully we will hear good news on the 3rd party development front, even if it’s not anything that we can work with immediately.

I think my dream announcement would be a large, high pixels-per-inch display that is multi-touch sensitive. I’m sick of using a mouse! I want to be able to change the size of any of my windows with a pinch of the fingers! Of course, there would be a few obstacles to overcome. Screen placement, for one. A monitor meant to be touched would have to be lower down to be comfortable to use, but does that leave room for a keyboard? I would prefer to still have a physical keyboard rather than relying on a virtual one. Also, what about attached iSights? That low down screen would not provide the most flattering of angles.

I suppose a multi-touch screen would not be perfect for everything though. A mouse is so precise compared to a finger. That preciseness is really handy for things like selecting text, or manipulating specific pixels in Photoshop. Maybe a stylus could be optionally used?

The new, multi-touch applications would present another problem. Would some applications be multi-touch only? It would kind of be a drag if all of the cool new interfaces still had to have one-touch compatibility, but I guess there’s no way around that.

Whatever happens, it’s sure to be an exciting week!

Coda

In their constant quest to raise the bar for quality Mac applications, Panic has just released their latest application, Coda. It’s a website editor for all of us hand-coders, and it’s more awesome than a robot that knows how to make a club sandwich (which I think would be pretty awesome, or maybe I’m just hungry). Not to mention the absolutely gorgeous website that I can’t stop staring at. It’s definitely motivation to keep improving my stuff! Good job guys, and happy 10th anniversary!

Neat Little Mac Apps Review

The Neat Little Mac Apps podcast (iTunes link) has taken the time to review Overflow, and I just wanted to say thanks!

They do mention two problems in the podcast, the first of which (Overflow sometimes can’t find a newly updated application that it should be able to) will be fixed as part of the next update. The second, the hotkey selection not showing up correctly in the preferences, seems to be machine type specific, but a fix for that is also in the works. Looks like some beta testers with various configurations will be needed for that one.

Missing Post Summary

Well, it seems I haven’t been updating this nearly as much as I should, and I’ve missed a whole bunch of things. So here’s my summary post to sum up all the posts that I should have written, but never did.

Macworld Expo
This one definitely should have gotten a mention. Stunt Software had a small booth at Macworld Expo this year, in the Apple Developer Pavilion (check out a small interview on Apple’s Developer site). Overall the show was great, and exhausting. I got to talk to a bunch of users, which was really cool. I think my feet still hurt though.

iPhone
I don’t necessarily need one, but oh boy do I want one! I just hope it doesn’t take too long to get to Canada - and that the plans aren’t too much. I just won’t be able to justify spending $100/month on a cell phone plan. Looks like my big theories that Telus would sell the iPhone in Canada were wrong (I saw a sign outside of a Telus store promoting iPods last summer).

The only bad news about the iPhone is the lack of developer support. Not even widgets? I promise I wont take down Cingular’s network. Come on, please?

Also, did anyone else notice the hugely important interface change that seems to have happened since Macworld, as seen in the “Hello” commercial that aired during the Oscars?

That’s right! They’ve changed the word Cingular to at&t! Okay, so in reality this change was probably made for purely aesthetic reasons, I still feel it’s the responsibility of Mac users everywhere to post even the smallest bits of news.

MacHeist Controversy
Well, it turns out that nobody was really as upset about this as it might have seemed at first. Overall it brought a lot of attention to small Mac developers, which is certainly a good thing. I find UI discussion really interesting as well, so I think the whole “Delicious Generation” thing is great.

Wii
It seems that every Mac developer also has a Wii - and I’m no exception. Like most things in this post, you’ve probably already read about it elsewhere, and basically I agree. It’s fun. And I haven’t had a video game system since I had a Super Nintendo. My Wii number is 7417 9232 9234 3905 if anybody wants to add me (it’s still so lonely in my Mii Parade!).

That’s it for now! Now that I’m all caught up, I should be able to get some more timely posts done.

Snapshot (aka PhotoBooth) 2.0

I’m happy to announce that PhotoBooth has been updated to version 2.0, and renamed it Snapshot! I’m very pleased with the way the new UI turned out - I think it really streamlines and simplifies the way the program is used. It’s also got some new features that I hope some people will like. And the best part is it’s out just in time for Macworld, thanks to a few late nights, so those signs that got printed up a few weeks ago will actually make sense!

If you’re at the show, please come by and say hi at booth #1338-07. Hope to see you all there!

MacSanta

MacSanta is handing out gifts of Mac software, discounted 20%. Software is available from a bunch of developers (Stunt included) with more being added all the time. Check it out, it’s the perfect time to buy that software you’ve had your eye on, or buy an early Christmas present for one of your new mac-converted friends (is it just me, or are there more and more of them these days?).

Look at the original post by the organizer of MacSanta or subscribe to the RRS feed to see what’s being added.

Update: MacSanta has gone back to the cyber north pole for now - thanks to everyone who took part!

Cocoa Jobs Board

Steven Frank, founder of Panic, author of the wildly successful novel The Frank Manifesto: 101 Radical Ideas That Will Turn Your World On Its Ear, Then Kick Your World’s Ear’s Ass*, and all around swell guy, has been running the extremely useful cocoadev wiki for a while now, and has just started up the Cocoa Jobs Board. Says Steven,

“Over the last few months, there has been increased interest in posting job listings on CocoaDev, and the wiki format hasn’t been working well for that — out of date (or filled) listings tend to stick around, making it hard for candidates to sift through, and recruiters had a difficult time understanding the wiki concept in general, resulting in a number of emails to me.”

So whether you’re interested in hiring someone to do Mac development work, or are looking for work, check it out. Of course, if you’re looking for work, you’ll probably want to wait until some jobs have actually been posted; the site just went live after all.

Overflow Icon

Well, so far the response the the newest version of Overflow has been great - thanks to everyone who has written to me with their comments, or posted reviews on their sites! The 2.0 release of Overflow also marks the first time I’ve released an application with an icon not designed by me (although I suppose it isn’t ALL that different from the version 1 icon). The credit for this one goes to Adam Betts. A few months ago Adam emailed me with his icon idea, and I liked it so much I copied it for this release. Thanks Adam!

Overflow 2.0

After much work, I’m happy to announce that Overflow 2.0 is out! There’s also a nifty little screencast to introduce some of the new features over on the main Stunt website.

I’m sure I’ll be posting more about the development and new features of Overflow 2 soon, but overall I am very happy with this new version. It has features that people have been wanting for a long time, and I know I’m already finding it more useful, and using it in ways I didn’t expect.

MacUpdate Promo

For the next 24 hours (well, 23.8 as of this writing), On The Job is going to be available through the MacUpdate Promo. Check it out for a great deal if you were thinking about purchasing On The Job. I think macZot did a pretty good job helping new people find out about our software, so I hope this does the same for a slightly different audience.
